Corrugated packaging is the backbone of industrial shipping and warehousing. Whether you're shipping heavy machine parts, bulk chemicals, or consumer goods, choosing the right corrugated box or container can reduce damage, lower freight costs, and improve warehouse efficiency. This guide covers everything industrial buyers need to know.
Understanding Corrugated Board: Flute Types Explained
Corrugated board is made of a fluted (wavy) inner layer sandwiched between flat liner sheets. The flute type determines the box's strength, cushioning ability, and stacking performance:
| Flute Type | Thickness | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| A-Flute | ~4.8 mm | Fragile items, maximum cushioning |
| B-Flute | ~3.2 mm | Canned goods, point-of-sale displays, die-cut boxes |
| C-Flute | ~4.0 mm | Most common; general shipping, glass, furniture |
| E-Flute | ~1.6 mm | Retail packaging, small boxes, printing surface |
| BC Double Wall | ~7.0 mm | Heavy industrial items, long-distance shipping |
For most industrial shipping applications, C-flute single wall or BC double wall are the most common choices.
Box Styles: RSC, FOL, and More
The box style determines how it's assembled and how it performs under load:
- RSC (Regular Slotted Container) — The most common style. All four flaps are the same length; the two outer flaps meet in the middle. Cost-effective and widely available.
- FOL (Full Overlap Slotted Container) — Outer flaps fully overlap, providing extra stacking strength and bottom support. Ideal for heavy or dense products.
- HSC (Half Slotted Container) — Open-top box with no top flaps. Used with a separate lid or for products loaded from the top.
- Telescope Box — Two-piece box where the lid slides over the base. Excellent for heavy items and easy access.
- Gaylord Box (Bulk Bin) — Large, pallet-sized corrugated container used for bulk materials, granules, and industrial components. Available in single, double, and triple wall construction.
Gaylord Boxes: The Industrial Bulk Shipping Standard
Gaylord boxes (also called bulk bins or octabins) are oversized corrugated containers designed to sit on a standard pallet. They're widely used in manufacturing, agriculture, and distribution for bulk materials. Key specifications to know:
- Standard Footprint — Typically 40" x 48" to fit a standard North American pallet
- Depth Options — Common depths range from 24" to 48"
- Wall Construction — Single wall (up to ~65 lbs), double wall (up to ~120 lbs), triple wall (up to ~300+ lbs)
- Liner Options — Kraft liner (standard), white liner (for printing/labelling), or wet-strength liner (for moisture-prone environments)
How to Read Box Dimensions
Corrugated box dimensions are always listed in the order: Length x Width x Depth (L x W x D), and always refer to the interior dimensions. This is important — the exterior dimensions will be slightly larger depending on the board thickness.
Example: A box listed as 18" x 12" x 10" has an interior space of 18 inches long, 12 inches wide, and 10 inches deep.
Box Strength Ratings: ECT vs. Mullen Burst
Two standards are used to rate corrugated box strength:
- ECT (Edge Crush Test) — Measures stacking strength. The most relevant rating for palletized shipping. Common ratings: 32 ECT (standard), 44 ECT (heavy duty), 51 ECT (extra heavy duty).
- Mullen Burst Test — Measures resistance to puncture and rough handling. Expressed in PSI. Common ratings: 200 lb, 275 lb, 350 lb.
For most industrial palletized shipping, ECT-rated boxes are the preferred standard as they better reflect real-world stacking performance.
Choosing the Right Box for Your Application
- Light goods (<20 lbs) — 32 ECT, C-flute RSC
- Medium goods (20–50 lbs) — 44 ECT, C-flute or BC double wall RSC
- Heavy industrial goods (50–100 lbs) — 51 ECT or 275 lb Mullen, double wall FOL or telescope
- Bulk materials — Triple wall Gaylord box on pallet
- Moisture-sensitive goods — Wax-coated or wet-strength liner corrugated
Packaging Accessories to Consider
The right box is only part of the equation. Consider these complementary supplies for a complete packaging solution:
- Void fill (air pillows, foam, kraft paper) to prevent product movement
- Strapping and banding for pallet security
- Stretch wrap for pallet unitization
- Corner protectors for stacking fragile items
- Packing tape and dispensers
