Casteel was accused of third-degree assault and second-degree unlawful imprisonment in connection with an incident that occurred in February 2022.\n\nThe incident involved Casteel and another officer, who were called to a disturbance at an apartment complex. Casteel was accused of body-slamming Dante Jelks, a Black man, who was a resident of the apartment complex. Jelks was not involved in the original disturbance, but he had been walking home when he encountered the officers.\n\nThe defense argued that Casteel used appropriate force and that Jelks was resisting arrest. However, prosecutors presented evidence that Jelks had been cooperative and that Casteel’s actions were unprovoked.\n\nThe jury was made up of four Black people and eight white people.\n\nThe decision on whether to retry Casteel will be made by the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office.
